Livestock Autopsy
A livestock autopsy, also known as a necropsy, is a systematic process that helps identify the cause of death, detect diseases, and ensure food safety.
Step 1: External Examination
- Initial assessment of the animal's body for visible signs of injury or disease
- Special attention to the head, including the tongue and lymph nodes, to look for signs of infections
Step 2: Internal Examination
- Dissection of the carcass to expose internal structures
- Systematic examination of major organs, such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and spleen, for signs of disease or damage
Step 3: Sample Collection
- Collection of tissue samples from organs and other tissues with unusual or suspicious findings
- Proper labeling of samples for laboratory testing
Step 4: Documentation and Diagnosis
- Detailed records of all examined features, observations, and potential cause of death
- Laboratory testing of collected samples to determine the cause of illness or death
- Findings inform the referring veterinarian, who can develop plans to intervene at the herd level
